About Baggeridge Country Park

Baggeridge Country Park is located just off the A463 at Gospel End, near Sedgley, on the Staffordshire/Dudley borough border. An award-winning Green Flag Park for over two decades, the park is also a designated Local Nature Reserve and Site of Biological Importance, home to a diverse array of wildlife despite its proximity to the urban Black Country.

The unique history of Baggeridge is a fascinating aspect of the park. It was originally part of the Earl of Dudley's grand Himley Hall landscaped parkland, redesigned in the 18th century by renowned landscape architect Lancelot 'Capability' Brown. This parkland character still permeates the southern half of the park. The northern half, however, was to become the site of Baggeridge Colliery, from 1902, one of the country's most productive deep coal mines. At its peak, it employed more than 3,000 men and produced about 12,000 tons of coal per week. The mine was the last deep coal mine to operate in the Black Country and ceased operations in March 1968.

Instead of leaving behind a stark industrial landscape, South Staffordshire Council embarked on a programme of land reclamation, beginning in the early 1970s. The park was officially opened by Princess Anne in 1983. The heaps of spoil, testament to decades of intensive mining, have been sculpted into rolling hills. The highest of these now features a toposcope which provides magnificent panoramic views across Sedgley and over to Himley Hall, the Clee Hills, the Malverns, the Wrekin and the Long Mynd, all visible on a clear day. The transformation is remarkable, from the clatter of industry to one of the most serene and biodiverse open spaces in the region.

At the centre of the park is Bag Pool, a tranquil lake which, although it appears to be entirely natural, was also shaped as part of the large-scale reclamation and remodelling of the land. A popular haven for wildfowl, Bag Pool can be enjoyed from a path which circles the water. Baggeridge Country Park is also crisscrossed with a network of smooth, flat paths that are suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs, as well as more challenging, steep woodland paths. Longer walks, such as the Woodland Walk and the Colliery Trail, weave their way through areas of woodland, pointing out remnants of the mine's past and connect through to Himley Park and Hall.

A pay-and-display car park at the entrance is a short walk from the tearoom and down to the Challenge Academy site. In essence, Baggeridge isn't just a location; it’s an adventure playground - and it’s precisely this sense of place that drew Challenge Academy here.

Challenge Academy at Baggeridge

Since 2016, Challenge Academy has evolved from a simple high ropes course into a premier outdoor activity provider for the Black Country.

from simple beginnings

What began as a single set of ropes woven into the trees has transformed into a hectare-sized adventure playground nestled within the park’s ancient woods, brimming with a variety of activities: from high ropes and climbing to net courses and obstacle challenges, all designed to safely push visitors of all ages and abilities out of their comfort zones while providing an engaging and fun experience.

Find Challenge Academy tucked away below the park’s tearoom - park your car, pay the fee, and follow the tree-lined track down to the site. The park setting itself is a key element of the Challenge Academy experience; every activity takes place amidst a backdrop of mature woodland, on land reclaimed from the old colliery, offering a natural and immersive environment that feels worlds away from a car park or a sports hall.
